Murakami’s Dresden Plate
2025 - 85”x90” - Machine applique and pieced, machine quilted without a frame (domestic)
In 2025 the Austin Modern Quilt Guild’s Community Outreach Design Challenge was “Modern Art Inspired Quilts”. In looking for inspiration for a design, I made the connection that Japanese artist Takashi Murakami’s iconic flowers were essentially the classic Dresden Plate quilt block.
I drafted a large scale pattern and created a four quadrant quilt featuring Murakami’s flowers. The quilt won the guild’s Member’s Favorite Award and was donated to Lifeworks to be gifted to a young adult transitioning from homelessness into permanent supportive housing.
