About Emily
Emily Chiyeko Weerts is a yonsei artist and community builder based in Austin, Texas. She is inspired to be creative by a long line of talented crafters in her family, including her grandmother who honed her skills while incarcerated as a teen during WWII.
In recent years, Emily has been unraveling and untangling her family history and mixed white and Asian identity. Currently most preoccupied by quilting, Emily is blending traditional mediums with modern approaches in an attempt to capture and express some of her “Big Japanese American Feelings”.
When she’s not performing capitalism or behind her sewing machine, Emily can be found cultivating a wildly supportive existence with her weird and wonderful community. Emily believes that one of the kindest things you can do for a dog is to scratch them where they are itchy.
